Failure Analysis of Mechatronic Systems

The failure modes of a mechatronic system include failure modes of mechanical, electrical, computer, and control subsystems, which could be classified as hardware and software failures. The failure analysis of mechatronic systems consists of hardware and software fault detection, identification (diagnosis), isolation, and recovery (immediate or graceful recovery), which requires intelligent control. The hardware fault detection could be facilitated by redundant information on the system and/or by monitoring the performance of the system for a given/prescribed task. Information redundancy requires sensory system fusion and could provide information on the status of the system and its components, on the assigned task of the system, and the successful completion of the task in case of operator error or any unexpected change in the environment or for dynamic environment. The simplest monitoring method identifies two conditions (normal and abnormal) using sensor information/signal: if the sensor signal is less than a threshold value, the condition is normal, otherwise it is abnormal. In most practical applications, this signal is sensitive to changes in the system/process working conditions and noise disturbances, and more effective decision-making methods are required.

Generally, monitoring methods can be divided into two categories: model-based methods and featurebased methods. In model-based methods, monitoring is conducted on the basis of system modeling and model evaluation. Linear, time-invariant systems are well understood and can be described by a number

of models such as state space model, input-output transfer function model, autoregressive model, and autoregressive moving average (ARMA) model. When a model is found, monitoring can be performed by detecting the changes of the model parameters (e.g., damping and natural frequency) and/or the

changes of expected system response (e.g., prediction error). Model-based monitoring methods are also referred to as failure detection methods.

Model-based systems suffer from two significant limitations. First, many systems/processes are nonlinear, time-variant systems. Second, sensor signals are very often dependent on working conditions. Thus, it is difficult to identify whether a change in sensor signal is due either to the change of working

conditions or to the deterioration of the process. Feature-based monitoring methods use suitable features of the sensor signals to identify the operation

conditions. The features of the sensor signal (often called the monitoring indices) could be time and/or frequency domain features of the sensor signal such as mean, variance, skewness, kurtosis, crest factor, or power in a specified frequency band. Choosing appropriate monitoring indices is crucial. Ideally the

monitoring indices should be: (I) sensitive to the system/process health conditions, (ii) insensitive to the working conditions, and (iii) cost effective. Once a monitoring index is obtained, the monitoring function is accomplished by comparing the value obtained during system operation to a previously determined threshold, or baseline, value. In practice, this comparison process can be quite involved. There are a

number of feature-based monitoring methods including pattern recognition, fuzzy systems, decision trees, expert systems, and neural networks. Fault detection and identification (FDI) process in dynamic systems could be achieved by analytical methods such as detection filters, generalized likelihood ratio (which uses Kalman filter to sense discrepancies in system response), and multiple mode method (which requires dynamic model of the system and could be an issue due to uncertainty in the dynamic model) (Chow and Willsky, 1984). As mentioned above, the system failures could be detected and identified by investigating the difference between various functions of the observed sensor information and the expected values of these functions. In case of failure, there will be a difference between the observed and the expected behavior of the system, otherwise they will be in agreement within a defined threshold. The threshold test could be performed on the instantaneous readings of sensors, or on the moving average of the readings to reduce noise. In a sensor voting system, the difference of the outputs of several sensors and each component (sensor or actuator) is included in at least one algebraic relation. When a component fails, the relations including that component will not hold and the relations that exclude that component will hold. For a voting system to be fail-safe and detect the presence of a failure, at least two components are required. For a voting system to be fail-operational and identify the failure, at least three components are required, e.g., three sensors to measure the same quantity (directly or indirectly).

Is It Time to Dump the Elitist Term Expat?

The majority of expats are white. That said, the term may be extended to well-heeled others – Blacks, Arabs and Asians — who speak English well, and have professional jobs with white friends who include them in their social circles. Africans? Sorry, no.

So what, exactly, is the difference between expats, immigrants and migrants? The answer is virtually nothing – except the elitist perception of the term.

What are the definitions?

Immigrants are defined as those who move to another country and plan on staying. Think of the people crammed into a boat trying to make it across to Europe. Or the refugees from Syria wading through snow at the Canadian border to escape from the United States before they get deported. “They” don’t want to go back to where they came from. And they” are often perceived as poor, uneducated and desperate.

Expats, on the other hand, have status. They may be married to a local or have plans of starting a business. And, yes, they do take jobs that might otherwise go to a national.

How about the migrants? They are people who move from one place to another in search of work. Migrants are the Mexicans who pick fruit in California and then go back across the border, the nannies from the Philippines who have work contracts or the laborers in Saudi Arabia who return to Thailand when their manual skills are no longer needed.

Expats, however, go from one contract to another in different countries or return “home” with a good bank balance.

In short, being an expat is desirable, exciting, and appealing. Being an immigrant or a migrant is not.

Why should I care about it?

The issues of prejudice, discrimination, classism, sexism, and racism need to be exposed at all levels.

When I went to work at the University of Waikato as a lecturer, for example, I wasn’t an immigrant. Instead, I was simply a Canadian who had moved to New Zealand.

When I crossed over to Australia, a “permeant visa” was stamped into my New Zealand passport at customs.

In both countries, I blended in with people, many of whom had come from England or other European countries. We never referred to — or thought of — ourselves as expats, or immigrants or migrants. Why should we have? We lived in cultures that didn’t question us because we were white.

Historically, the majority of people in North America, Australia and New Zealand were economic immigrants or migrant workers. As they took over the countries, however, they didn’t invite the indigenous peoples, the Blacks or the Mexicans to join them. Instead they marginalized these people. So even if a Mexican family has lived in the United States for a couple of generations, they are still thought of — and treated — as immigrants.

What is my situation?

I am a migrant who wants to become an immigrant in Colombia. Since I left Australia at the end of 2008 I have lived in Morocco, Chile, Argentina, Cambodia, Colombia and Peru. The periods of time vary from four to 18 months. I support myself my teaching and writing. Although I prefer the latter to the former we are all prostitutes when it comes to work. But that is a topic for another article.

I am currently living in Medellin where the locals refer to me as la gringa de Boston – the name of the barrio – as there aren’t any other foreigners here. Or if there are, they are in hiding.

Although I want to become an immigrant, the visa rules hamper the process as I can only stay in the country for 180-days per calendar year as a tourist. The choices to change my status are limited. The first is to marry a local. Even though I had a number of friends volunteer, it could become complicated and there is no absolute guarantee.

The second option is to invest 200KUSD – cough, cough – and start a business or buy real estate. Another possibility is to pay hideously expensive fees and study Spanish for five years at an approved university. The least attractive option is to teach 48-hours a week for ridiculously low wages at a school that will help English-speakers get visas.

In the other countries, the rule for migrants like me was that I had to leave the country every 90-days and then re-enter. The exception was Cambodia where I could have stayed forever and a travel agency could have arranged my visa for a year at a time.

When I lived in Morocco, for example, I once crossed the border at Ceuta in the entry line, and then walked across to the exit line. I had only been outside the country for 15 minutes, but it was good enough a 90-day stamp.

But the only reason I could do it because I was white and considered an expat. The immigrants and migrants from Africa were not accorded the same treatment and were often turned back.

What next?

Generally, I avoid people who call themselves expats. However, from time to time I will attend an InterNations event to remind myself of why I don’t do it more often.

From now on, when I encounter westerners, I am going to ask them if they are an immigrant or a migrant.

I suspect the inquiry won’t be terribly well received as it questions the romantic illusion of “living the dream.”

Child Abuse: Should Someone Expect Other People To Empathise Them If They Were Abused As A Child?

The beginning of someone’s life can be a time when they received what they needed in order to develop into a well-adjusted adult. As a result of this, they will now have what they need to handle life.

Now, this is not to say that their life will be plain sailing; what it comes down to is that they won’t have the tendency to feel overwhelmed by life. There will the challenges they face and there will be the strength that they have to overcome them.


For example, if a tree was planted and this tree received what it needed, it will grow to be big and strong. And it could be said that the bigger it gets, the more pressure it will have to deal with.

This is because it will have to deal with all kinds of weather conditions, and if it wasn’t strong enough, it would soon end up falling down. In the same way, as one goes from a child to an adult, they are also going to experience more pressure.

The Early Stages

When one was a baby, there would have been people around them who looked after them and protected them. If they experienced pressure, it is likely to have been something that didn’t last for very long.

Their own growth and development would have been the most important thing, and other people would have dealt with any problems that arose. As they wouldn’t have been equipped to handle too much stress at this age, this would have been incredibly important.

Time Goes By

Yet as they continued to grow in all areas, they would have gradually been able to the handle the things that they were unable to handle before. This is then similar to how people gradually increase the amount of weight that they are able to lift as they get stronger, as opposed to putting all the weight on straight away.

Due to how complex the human brain is, this is not a process that can be rushed; it takes time and the right nutrients need to be provided. Thus, through receiving what they needed during this time, it would have allowed them to gradually give something back to the world.

Reaping the Crop

The love and care that they received would have given them ability to give love and care to other human beings. So while the people around them would have had to have put a lot of effort into their development, it would have been worth it in the long run.

A similar process takes place when one plants their own seeds to grow vegetables. When they one takes care of them in the beginning, they won’t get anything back; but after a little while, they will have a lot of healthy food to eat.

Part of Life

And through receiving what they needed to receive during this time, there will be the things that they can do that they don’t even think about. This is not to say that they don’t appreciate these things; what it comes down to is that this is likely to be how their life has been for such a long time.

What this can relate to is their ability to regulate their own emotions and to feel good about themselves. Having a sense of self, boundaries, feeling safe, and being in touch with their needs and feelings will also be part of this.

A Radically Different Experience

However, although some people will have had a childhood like this and be able to handle life as an adult, there will be others who had a difference upbringing. As a result of this, they are likely to be missing a lot of the things that other people take for granted.

If one has looked into what took place and they have been doing what they can to heal themselves, they will realise why they are different to other people. Yet if this is not the case, they could believe that the reason they are different comes down to the fact they are inherently flawed, for instance.

Perfectly Normal

If they were able to find out about how their early years affected them, they might see that there is a reason why they are experiencing life in this way. There would then be no reason for them to blame themselves or to feel as though they are incapable.

This is not to say that one’s genetics won’t have played a part or that everyone responds in the same way to abuse. If one was a sensitive child, for instance, it is naturally going to be a lot harder for them to handle life as an adult if they were abused than it would be if they received what they needed.

Reaching Out

But regardless of whether one has done any kind of healing work on themselves, there is the chance that they have reached out to others. This may have been a time when they opened up about what took place when they were younger

There may have been moments when other people were able to put themselves in their shoes and showed compassion. And due to what they have been through, this is likely to have been something that had a positive effect on them.

Another Response

Alternatively, one may have had moments when people didn’t respond in this way, and one may have felt even worse. This could mean that someone made out that one was lying, or they may have told them that they need to ‘move on’.

Along with this, they may have been times when one told someone and it was if they were talking about the weather. It wouldn’t have had much of an effect on them, and it would have been clear that they were unable to empathise with them.

What’s going on?

There are a number of reasons as to why other people would respond in this way, and it could be said that it will be important for them to be careful who they open up to. As if they are not discerning, they will create even more problems for themselves.

When someone is unable to empathise with them, it can show that they are in denial about their own abuse, and if they were to connect to how one feels, they would have to face their own pain. Another reason why this would take place is that the person they spoke to had a childhood that was very different, and so they simply can’t connect to what one experienced.


One of the reasons why a therapist can make such a difference is that they will be able to offer one the empathy and compassion they need. In addition to this, there will be the support and assistance they offer that will allow one to heal themselves and to move forward.
